(EXIT Exams Results: SSR Medical College is the Top Performer with 78.70% in Indian EXIT Exams-2021 and 2022, among 369 overseas medical colleges, where from about 39,000 (in 2021) / 52,000 (in 2022) returning Indian students appeared in EXIT Exams-2021 and 2022, including countries from Russia, Ukraine, China, CIS countries, Philippines etc., who's average pass %ge was about 10%, and in some good cases up to 39%; as per National Board of Exams Website.).
For Dec.2023: EXIT Exams our Pass result is again above 75%, though the NBE website is yet to be updated for country wise results for this year.
Our Outstanding Success Rate in Foreign Medical Graduates (FMG) Exams/Screening Test in India:
As usual, once again posting an outstanding success rate in FMG screening Test in India, out of 79 of our Indian graduates, who appeared for FMG Screening Test/Exit Exam held in 2023; 75 out of 79 have passed this Screening Test. 1 girl graduate dropped out of the screening test exam due to medical reasons.
Ours is, probably, the only College, which performs so well and posts almost above 75% pass rate almost every year in the FMG Screening Test. (We have not written 99% pass in view of the absence of all data and it is better to err on the side of caution).
The overall statistics about the FMG Screening Test said to be mentioned by the Hon. Dr. Prahalad Joshi, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of India about medical graduates from China, CIS countries like Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan,Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia, etc, Philippines, and some other neighboring countries, is failure rate of about 90% i.e. pass rate is only about 10%. (vide an article in Times of India dated 1st March 2022 reported by Shreya HS, ToI correspondent).
Despite such a high failure rate, most of the students are lured by the students recruiting agencies to such countries for considerations other than academics and cheaper options, which ultimately proves to be much more costlier at the end.
The data mentioned in the article does not mention the statistics from our College in Mauritius.
Out of our more than 1700 medical doctors graduating from our SSR Medical College, we are not aware of any one who has appeared in the Indian FMG Screening Test and has not passed it, except may be some one, who is not in our notice; and has opted some other family profession and has opted to not appear and avail all the provided chances..
Challenge : As such, we challenge and will be happy to learn, if any applicant seeking admission in the MBBS Course at our place proves the above fact wrong, with documentary evidence supported by an affidavit from our concerned failed medical graduates, certifying that he/she has failed in the FMG Screening Test in India 'despite availing all the provided attempts'.
Such one applicant, the one who approaches us first of all, with the above mentioned documentary evidence, proving our claim of success rate of 90% for a particular batch in a reference year to be wrong, will be given a remission of Rs. 7,50,000/- (Indian Rs. Seven Lakhs Fifty Thousands only) / or US$ 10.000/- by the College in the total Fee.
In a welcome development to test and ensure the minimum thresh hold of skill and knowledge expected from a doctor, the Govt. of India regulations now require that all the students graduating from Indian Medical Colleges/Deemed Universities/ Govt. Universities must pass this Exit Exam from this year in the same way as the students graduating from foreign medical colleges/Universities; which will be a real test of the level of teaching and training at all the medical institutions, Indian as well as overseas.

Interviews are generally conducted at New Delhi, generally on the last Saturday of the month after NEET results are out.
However, in view of the extraordinary situation caused by Covid-19 epidemic and lock down; this year, the admissions for Indian students will be made on the basis of class 12 board marks and NEET Pass results (of any earlier year also); and interviews will not be necessary.
However, the original papers (Specially Class 12 Board Marks and NEET pass result) will be verified at the College before final registration in the Course.

If and once the candidate is accepted:
After acceptance of their application, a Provision Admission Letter is issued to such applicants, who meet the minimum requirements of admission for signing and submitting the duly signed following papers in about 10 working days: 1. Admission acceptance letter, 2. Affidavit , 3. Admission Agreement, 4. Visa Form given in the Prospectus Booklet along with first and last 2 pages of their valid Passport, 5. Character Certificate from School and their local Police Station and 6. Copy of latest Bank Statement showing a minimum balance of INRs.3 lacs.
Please note that No Visa processing fee is charged. However, the Students Visa is applied only after the "Registration Fee" has been paid directly by Telegraphic Transfer (TT) or DD to the Indian Ocean Medical Institute Trust's College bank account in Mauritius, which will be communicated only to the accepted students (so as to avoid the risk of hacking ) after they are ready with all the mentioned papers.
Please note that no payment is to be made to anyone in India or elsewhere except directly to the Indian Ocean Medical Institute Trust's College account in Mauritius by TT or DD.
INTERNSHIP in Mauritius:
In view of the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India Notfn. dated 18th Nov.2021; the Ministry of Health & Wellness, Govt. of Mauritius has agreed to arrange for the internship of Indian Students in the Govt. hospitals there (vide MoH, Govt. of Mauritius Letter no.MHC/MC/RG/FS dated 19th May, 2022) and arrangements would be in place in due course i.e. by the time students admitted in 2022 reach their final year.
The Economic Dev. Board of Mauritius (EDB), Govt. of Mauritius has already initiated the process to put such provision for internship/clinical clerkship in place in Mauritius.

Admissions 2024/25:
So that the Indian students do not suffer, the intake is twice a year effective Aug. 2017; i.e. once in the month of August (Final University Exams in the month of May in 5th year); &
once again in the month of February (Final University Exams in the month of Nov. in 5th year). This batch is for (International/Other) every year.

Aggregate 60% in PCB & English at Class 12 Board + NEET Pass(of any year) for Indians.
(Lateral Transfers / Credit for Transfer from other medical Colleges not accepted, as we are not sure of the quality of education at other Colleges).

All selected students can plan their flights accordingly.(Return flight is to be planned according to vacations/ individual's convenience and availability of seats any time between Dec.17th to 23rd Dec. 2024).

We receive quite many requests from students from other medical Colleges for transfer to our College. Please note that we do not accept transfer cases from other medical schools because we are not sure of the quality of the teaching and training there. i.e. if some one intends to join SSR Medical College,She/he has to begin as from year one, if he meets our requirements.

Please note, we don't accept transfers /credits from other medical colleges.
Scholarship: A partial Scholarship Scheme by the Govt of Mauritius for limited number of students from some African countries is available (for details see : www.studymauritius.info/mauritiusafricascholarships.aspx).
(Any South African Student , who should miss the interview in Feb.'25 at Durban, due to unavoidable / medical reasons, can still come to Mauritius Campus (only after Sending the matric marksheet with contact tel no. written on it, reconfirming the interview date with College office prior to leaving for Mauritius) for interview/Original mark sheet verification to be conducted tentatively on 27/28th Feb. '25; absolutely and totally at his own risk and peril.
It is made amply clear that a student coming for interview on tourist visa may have to return and come back again on a business visa as the conversion of Tourist visa into student Visa is not allowed by the Immigration authorities of Mauritius.)

The S S R Medical College has its own Green Campus spread over 18 Acres, comprising of about 2,50,000 sq ft of Academic and Residential Hostel Blocks.

The S S R Medical College has air conditioned Lecture Theaters (Capacity-200/140/75), a large Lecture Hall (Capacity-500), Examination Halls along with required many Labs cum Demonstration Rooms and a State of the Art "Clinical Skills Laboratory" (air conditioned) with teaching aids imported from Japan, for simulated teaching of most of the maladies and more than sufficient number of Cadavers, imported from USA/Europe. It has more than a dozen seminar/ tutorial rooms for small group teaching and a 5000 sq ft Dissection Hall with teaching aids from Germany.

The College has air conditioned Central Library with on-line connectivity and Wi Fi facility and 50 terminals for students apart from separate libraries for different departments. The Reading Room in Girls hostel is also air conditioned.

There are separate Common Rooms for boys and Girls in the Academic block as well as in hostels with indoor games facilities like Table Tennis, Carom, Chess etc. The Boys hostel has a Volley Ball cum Basket Ball court in the hostel court yard as well as a Tennis court on the Campus. Cricket and Football is played in nearby grounds on prefixed days.
- On the Campus Safe Hostel:

The Boy's and Girl's Hostels are at the Campus itself, about 2 minutes walk from the Academic Block. The Hostel rooms are modest/Spartan and are planned for twin sharing with attached toilet, sink and bath rooms. However, students have the option (generally 2nd year onwards) of taking the complete room for themselves on payment of charges for the full room. The rooms are provided with one electrical bulb point, a bed, mattress, one table, chair and one steel cupboard for each student.

Students should arrange for their own pillow, bed sheet and blanket as per their liking.

The students, with the prior consent of their Parents and the College, can stay outside the Campus also, which is generally permitted only to the students 2nd year onwards.

Parents visiting their wards are advised to book hotels,many available in Curepipe, Cyber City and on the beaches, through inter net before arrival.

Present charges for hostel rooms are @US$1200/- per year/ per student. If a student wants the room for him/herself (subject to college policy at the time of such request and availability), then it can be availed on payment of US$2400/per year. The Charges are barely enough to cover the expensive electricity, water and maintenance expenses. Hostel Charges for full year are to be paid in advance before moving in the hostel. Hostel facility can not be availed for part of the Calendar year.

The College has a on the Campus Canteen facility, serving modest veg and non veg food at a very reasonable cost. Breakfast, lunch and dinner to hostel inmates is available in this canteen, with a recent addition of an open sit out for about 100 students at a time with Wi Fi availability. The students can eat and communicate with their friends and families, while relaxing.

The Mess Charges are about US$ 100/ per month and has to be paid directly to the Mess Operators. Students can also avail the services of other caterers, who supply cooked food at the Campus.

Another big Cafeteria building is nearing completion, where variety food is planned on cash and carry basis.

The Clinical training to our students is provided in Victoria (800 beds) and JLN Hospital (600 beds). Detail is available on respective websites. College transport is available for our students from College to hospitals and back.
- Mauritius being an island country experiences tropical Cyclones of moderate to severe intensity, once or twice a year. During the Cyclone and periods of heavy rains, the electricity/water supply supply, transport and mess facility and the related services get severely effected. Though advance warning is issued; the students are expected to be ready to fend for themselves and for little inconveniences during such emergencies,which also serves as a training to handle contingencies.

HISTORY:
The Indian Ocean Medical Institute Trust (IOMIT) was established in 1996 with the avid objective of promotion of education and learning and setting up a medical college in Mauritius in the name of the 'Father of the Nation' late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), who incidentally was a doctor also.
Mr. R.P.N.Singh, an educationist and social planner from India is the Founder Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Trust for Life.
The SSR Medical College was inaugurated on 18th Sept.1999 by Dr the Hon. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius.
Being the first medical college in Mauritius, the idea has been to setup & develop a campus of international standards, which has subsequently become the nerve center of medical education not only in the southern African region but in the whole of Indian Ocean Rim countries including Malaysia, India, Africa and the Gulf region.
Following the sterling success of the SSR Medical College, Mauritius- the land of sun, sand and shooting stars, is fast emerging as a ‘Knowledge Hub’ and center of medical education in the Indian Ocean Rim region. Students (mostly from the Diaspora) from 17 countries such as India, Nepal, the U.K., USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, UAE, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have taken admission at the SSR Medical College.
The visionary Prime Minister of Mauritius could immediately foresee the long term value of such a medical campus for the country which would establish Mauritius as an education exporting country and brain service destination in the entire Indian Ocean Rim region and transform Mauritius 'from a land of leisure to a land of learning'.
The policy planners of the Government of Mauritius including the representatives of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education Science & Technology, Ministry of Economic Planning, International Trade and Development, Tertiary Education Commission, University of Mauritius and Chairman of the IOMIT deliberated together the modalities and setting up of the SSR Medical College in a Task Force under the Central Policy Analysis and Evaluation Unit, Prime Minister's Office, Government of Mauritius.
It was mandated and approved by the Task Force and the Govt of Mauritius to set up the SSR Medical College in affiliation to the University of Mauritius, which would award the Graduate (MBBS) and Post Graduate (M.D./M.S.) degrees.
The SSR Medical College is affiliated to the University of Mauritius.
The College is duly approved by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Mauritius and the MBBS degree is recognised by the Medical Council of Mauritius / the WHO / Medical Board of California, USA and almost in all other countries of the world, subject to local regulations and passing the local licentiate exams.
The Ministry of Health and Quality of life has promised 'unflinching support' (See Hon.Health Minister's Commitment in Massages) and provides state of the art J L Nehru, Victoria SSR and other specialty hospitals having more than 1000 beds for the clinical training of the students of the SSR Medical College.
The long cherished dream of our Chairman and like-minded people from India and Mauritius as well as the desire of the Mauritian people to have a medical college in Mauritius, has now become a reality with the active and avowed support of the Government and the people of Mauritius.
Global RECOGNITION:
The word wide recognition of our MBBS degree is self evident from the fact that hundreds of our graduates are already working in almost all the countries, where they have desired and chosen to work; such as in the USA, U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, UAE, Nepal, Sri Lanka and India etc.
The MBBS degree of the SSR Medical College has been recognised by the Medical Board of California, USA and the SSR Medical College has been recognised for listing in the IMED/ECFMG, USA and the WHO. The listing can be viewed on the respective websites.
This enabled our medical graduates to register and practice medicine across the world and specially in the USA and California, where recognition rules are the toughest. As a result, more than hundreds of our medial graduates are already practicing medicine in most reputed hospitals like Mt Sinai, Johns Hopkins's USA/ UK/ France and in many other developed countries
Recognition by the MCI:
As per regulations in India, any Indian citizen with a foreign medical graduate degree (FMG) has to pass the screening test (EXIT exam), held twice every year by the National Board of Examination, Govt of India.
The MCI has 'dispensed off' the requirement of "Eligibility Certificate" with effect from 1st June 2018; and after 1st June 2018, the result of the NEET pass shall be deemed to be treated as Eligibility Certificate for joining a foreign medical MBBS / Undergraduate course. (vide MCI Public Notice dated 8th March,2018, issued by Dr. Reena Nayyar, Secretary(I/C)).
The Eligibility Certificate requirement was not necessary from 2013 to 2014 but was reintroduced in 2016 and was mandatory till 1st June 2018.
Indian Applicants are advised to check the latest status with the MCI / WEBSITE and obtain Eligibility Certificate, if they have applied or taken admission before 1st June 2018 or they must have passed NEET exam, if seeking/taking admission after 1st June, 2018.
The SSR medical College graduates have the stellar record of having Outstanding pass rate*, at this stringent MCI screening test, which speaks of the level of teaching and training at the College. However, the FMG results are dependent on individual performance at this examination.The list of all our graduates, who have cleared this Screening test and are registered with the Medical Council of India can be viewed at our website (Alumni List).
As usual, once again, our graduates have reportedly posted around 90% pass (at first attempt) in the screening test of MCI, as per results published in Jan.' 2024.
(Some News Papers have published misleading incorrect reports about Screening Test Results without collecting the data about the SSR Medical College or without verifying the facts about the results of the SSR Medical College graduates. The matter has been brought to their notice. Though such reporters seldom publish such corrections.)
*NBE has informed in reply to a RTI that it does not maintain data for FMG in format which shows SPECIFIC College wise number of the total medical GRADUATES appearing/passed and failed in the FMG Examination.(Ref No. RTI/CPIO-1251A/EXAM/NBE/2016/16642 dated Dec.28,2016).
The Country:
"Mauritius was made first and the paradise was copied after it" Mark Twain the famous American wrote in his book "Following the Equator".
This paradise is located on the 20th parallel just north of the tropic of Capricorn, 1265 miles from the east coast of Africa, and about 2500 miles in the south west of the Indian coast. The Country and the location of the SSR Medical College can be seen on the Google Map.
Passing through myriad vicissitudes, it was finally occupied by the British in 1810 after the Napoleonic wars. Mauritius achieved independence on 12th March, 1968 with Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam as its first Prime Minister and was proclaimed a republic on 12th March 1992. Mauritius today is universally acknowledged as being one of the most democratic and one of the safest countries in the developing world.
From basically a mono-crop agricultural economy at the time of independence in 1968, today, Mauritius has achieved the status of a Newly Industrialised Country with a fairly stable population, almost zero unemployment, and per capita income of about US $ 8000. The economy is based on sugar, manufacturing and tourism. It also belongs to the category of high Human Development Index countries. Mauritius today is picture of a thriving economy with proven democratic traditions.
The population of this rainbow country comprises of about 52% of Hindu Indians, 16% of Muslim Indians, 29% of Christians of European, African and Chinese descent and 1% of Buddhists of Chinese descent. English is the official language though French is used extensively. Creole and Bhojpuri Hindi are other common mediums of communication. Living in perfect peace and harmony, Mauritius is true model of a global village and symbol of unity in diversity. With its ethnic diversity and rainbow culture, Mauritius is a home away from home and is also known as a "Mini India".
Mauritius is well connected by air with the major cities of the Indian Ocean Rim countries, Gulf (Dubai) and Europe. Air Mauritius flies direct twice a week from New Delhi and Chennai/Bangluru and thrice a week from Mumbai to Mauritius. Admissions for will be finalised depending on vacancy / till publication of class 12th results in South Africa / Senior Cambridge results in Mauritius. The A-Level results are expected on 16th Feb.2022.

Due to Covid-19 endemic, the interviews at Durban may not be held this year. The students can apply on line through our website icon: Admissions, following the steps stated above and they will be guided further/offered a provisional admission/seat in the course.
About 20 places (for10 Boys and 10 Girls) will be offered for admission at Durban.
The applicants who accept the offer on the spot and confirm their acceptance of seat by way of producing a Demand Draft/TT for US$6000/- towards Registration Fee (vide Prospectus) in the name of 'INDIAN OCEAN MEDICAL INSTITUTE TRUST" and signing the 'Agreement for Admission' would have priority in admission.
Tentative date for Final Interview / Verification of Original Mark sheet / Documents at the College Campus: 27/28 Feb.25.
(To avoid any inconvenience, you must reconfirm Interview Date telephonically from College office before reaching College Campus in Mauritius).
Should any provisionally accepted South African student reach Mauritius before 27/28 Feb.'25; he/she would be doing so at his/her own risk, as no hostel accommodation will be allotted before 26th Feb.'25.
The students intending to avail hostel facility are also advised to carry / must carry with them the copies of DDs/ Bank Transfer Receipts, as proof of payment of the Hostel Registration fee and Room Charges for the full year in advance. Place in the hostel room will not be allotted without such payment and production of its proof before joining the hostel.
The College would not be responsible for their accommodation/visa issues, as the room in the College hostel would be allotted only after 26th Feb.2025.
Normally, Regular Classes Commence in the 1st week of Sept. and March around VIJAY DASHAMAI in India and MAHASHIVRATRI Festivals in Mauritius respectively.
All shortlisted Students are expected to come in all readiness (ready to pay their required tuition and hostel fee etc) to join the regular classes and stay for the course, as next holidays will be only in June. Staying in Hostel is not compulsory and the place in hostel will be given on first come basis.
Accompanying Parents are advised to make their own stay arrangements in Mauritius. Many budget hotels are available in nearby areas of Quatre Borne and Ebene.
Any one missing the interview date shall mail his/her Class 12 / HSC / Matric Board mark sheet to us , (writing his/her contact tel no. on it, for quick and easy communication) and can make On-line Application for possible offer of admission through our website.
However, a hard copy of Application Form, duly signed by the concerned college authority, contained in "Prospectus" Booklet must be filled at the time of final Interview. No admission request shall be entertained, unless a hard copy of the "Application Form" contained in the Prospectus & Information Booklet is completed, filled and signed by the Applicant.
On receipt of the Class 12 / HSC/Matric Board Mark sheet, our office will guide you further.
Note: Please note that transfers from other Medical Schools are not accepted as we are not sure of quality of their education.
There are no bursaries/scholarships, as the College is a self supported institution with one of the lowest possible fee structure and bare minimum revenue to meet its expenses.
At the time of interview, please bring THE FOLLOWING:
1. Copy of your NEET Pass result and Class 12/ HSC /Matric Board Marksheet/ Statement of Symbols issued by the respective Government Board; 2. Two recent Passport Size Photographs; 3.Copy of the Passport pages showing your details and address (generally first and last Two pages of your Passport) and 4. Copy of Parents Bank Statement for the last 6 months, showing sound financial status to support overseas education / for Visa purposes. Indian Students are advised to bring copy of NEET result also.
The admissions are based on merit + capacity of the Applicant to meet the financial requirements of the overseas education.
The visa Application Form is to be signed at the time of Interview.
All these papers have to be submitted / Stapled with the hard copy of the "Admission Application Form" contained in the Hard copy of the 'Prospectus and Information Brochure' (Costing US$20 or Rs. 1000/- SA Rand 100/-) to be filled at the time of interview.
The Prospectus Booklet also contains the Admission Agreement, which is to be completed prior to joining the Course.
Few Suggested Books (but not limited to) for 1st Year Subjects are:
Anatomy: 1. Cunningham's Manual of Practical Anatomy, 2. Snell's Clinical Anatomy 3. Gray's Anatomy. (The Anatomy Lab has about 20 real Cadavers for dissection by students)
Physiology: 1. Text Book of Medical Physiology by Guyton.
Biochemistry: 1. Harper's Biochemistry.
Note: 1. The suggested Books are only tentative and students are fee to have their own choice of books. The students must purchase and organise their own Text Books before joining the Course, as many books are not available in Mauritius.
2.Our Registration and Accreditation with the TEC,which is renewable every 5 years, is valid till 2027 and 2028 respectively.

All the concerned, students and parents at the SSR Medical College, Belle Rive, Mauritius are here by informed that:
1. There is no shortage of food in the canteen and both the canteens at the College are supplying food regularly to the students at the Campus. We have supply that can last for a sufficient and required period of time.
2. It has come to our notice that Some students have expressed panic reactions to the media. Kindly don’t panic and don’t spread rumors about the scarcity of food .
3. All the students are in good health and are under constant supervision.
4. The overseas students who wish to leave the campus are allowed to leave. However, you should be aware of the fact that you might be kept in the quarantine for a period of two weeks.
5. The flight to Mumbai which was supposed to depart on 22nd March has been preponed to 21st March . Indian students who wish to leave can book their tickets.
6. Those students who don’t wish to leave the campus, please follow the safety guidelines. You will be taken care of well.
We assure you a safe stay in the hostel and there will never be any shortage of food.
All the hostel residents are requested to realise that it is an emergency situation and they should behave responsibly. The College expects every one to perform their role responsibly and to cooperate in handling this unprecedented situation rather than panicking and scare mongering.

The Indian High Commission Officials in Mauritius have also visited the College today morning and informed students to stay composed and who so ever wants to return to India can take today‘s evening flight to Mumbai.
